Working on the Sabbath

My first question is this: what day does the Sabbath belong too? I know that the Old Testament spoke of the Sabbath being on the seventh day on the week. But in this home, it is celebrated on Sunday.

My Mother said that the reason why we celebrate the Sabbath on Sundays is because Christ died on a Friday, and rose on the third day--it being Sunday. So, was it a man-made ruling that caused the Sabbath to be moved? Or was it truly divine intervention that encouraged the change?

And furthermore, what about working on the Sabbath? God adamantly proclaims throughout the Bible that those who work on the Sabbath will be severely punished! This statement contrasts strongly with what my community believes. All of the stores around here are open, and people are shopping. I went shopping myself, this morning too.

So, what is the answer?

  1. Hello Jessica!

My family and I believe that Saturday is the Sabbath. Throughout the Bible Saturday is referenced as the Sabbath. (Gen. 2:3; Exo. 20:11; Exo. 31:16-17; Deut 5:15; etc) In our studies, we have found that the reason the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday was because of a degree by Constantine. Constantine was a Roman Emperor who lived in the 3rd and 4th century AD. In 321 AD he decreed "On the venerable day of the Sun [Sunday] let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed." With those words he changed the sabbath from Saturday to Sunday killing and persecuting those who continued to keep the Biblical sabbath day, Saturday. Also it is believed by many scholars that Constantine was not a Believer, but rather pretended to be. In many of his decrees he mixed pagan worship with Biblical commands.

Also, it is impossible to count 3 days and 3 nights from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. It just doesn't work.

You are very right, the Bible does forbid working on the Sabbath. However the Christian culture of today says that just going to church on Sunday for an hour is enough. My family and I keep the Sabbath holy; we do no work (house work, yard work, school work, etc) we also don't spend any money on the sabbath. It's very hard in this worldly culture to follow and obey our Father's commands. But if you are faithful to keep them, He will bless and reward you.

Stay Strong in our Father, Jessica!

  2. I second with Sonja! :)

Also, if you look closely and read some historical text, you'll see it was the Roman Catholic Church that changed Sabbath to sunday. :P Definitely done by man, not YHWH!

  3. Look what our Lord Jeshua says, He says in Mt. 5.17, that not singe Jod will fall apart until heaven and earth disappear. Not: until I died on the cross, but until heaven and earth disappear. Do they still exsist? Yes. We have not the the heaven....And our Lord Jesus, Jeshuah HaMaschiach says, not everyone who calls me Lord will be saved. Out of my sight, you who trespassed (hope it´s the right word) the Law. Mt 7.23
(Evildoers is not the right translation)
I know so many christians who keep the sabbath. We don´t care how many shops are opened. Acts 5.29 tells us to obey God more than men. And the sabbath is called the sign between God and us, Ez. 20.20. And we´ll keep the sabbath for evermore under the NEW Heaven, as you see in Is. 66.(end) So why leave it away?. Are you allowed to lie? To kill? To have idols, to commit adultary? The same way I don´t want to forget the sabbath as a present, which has it`s origin not on Mt.Sinai but at the beginning...
    Shalom
